Although many sticklers hold that only “billiards” was the correct form until about 1920, some evidence shows that both were used interchangeably until then. In American English usage, both “pool” and “billiards” were correct past tense forms at least up to the early 20th century. There is also a huge number of other games that use either pool or billiard balls and may be classed as “billiard” in the broadest sense of this term, such as table shuffleboard, pinball, etc. The difference between these games and regular pocket billiards is that instead of balls there are just these marbles moving on premarked tracks towards the center of each table where they have to pass a scoring ring. In both tabletop variants of the Swiss traditional game rhauban, players score points by sending marbles through strategically positioned scoring hoops. However, World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) defines the pool as “playing with five object balls…and cue ball” only, and thus excludes the games of snooker and English billiards. In the market? Skilled players can spend several minutes assessing a table before making their first shot. Even a slight slant can affect the roll of the ball and the accuracy of a shot. The level of the table is important also. In the same way that a golfer rolls a ball over the putting green before planning his shot, players will roll a ball over a pool or billiards table and check for defects in the felt. The quality of the felt affects the way the ball moves across the surface after a player’s shot. High quality tables have a playing surface made of the finest and smoothest felt stretched over a level piece of slate. Pool and billiards both depend on a high quality table for the best possible game play. Just like the game of billiards, pool players consider the angle of each possible shot. ![]() Pool tables have a pocket at each corner as well as a pocket at the center of each of the long sides. There are several variations of pool, but the objective of all of them is sinking your balls in the pockets before your opponent can.
